Getting Started: The Picts in Conan Lore

The Picts of the Hyborian Age are a complex, primal race defined by cultural stagnation and geographic divergence. To effectively depict or roleplay a Pict, it is essential to move past pop-culture tropes and understand their unique evolutionary path as established by Robert E. Howard.

The Evolutionary Schism

The identity of the Picts is rooted in the aftermath of the Great Cataclysm, which triggered a significant racial and cultural split:

  • The Pictish Isles (The Western Lineage): Picts who survived in the Far West interbred with Lemurian refugees. This resulted in the emergence of Asiatic traits, which would eventually evolve into the cultures analogous to historical Native American peoples.
  • The Hyborian Continent (The Hyborian Picts): The Picts who settled within the Thurian (later Hyborian) territories remained isolated. They interbred with indigenous Neanderthal populations, resulting in the short, stocky frames and the "stone age" cultural stagnation that defines their presence during the Hyborian Age.

Defining the "White Race"

In the context of the Hyborian Age, the Picts are categorized as a "white race." However, this nomenclature is distinct from the fair-skinned Hyborians or Cimmerians.

  • Skin Tone: They possess dark, copper-toned skin—noticeably darker than the Hyborian peoples, yet lighter than the populations of the Black Kingdoms.
  • Biological Status: They represent a transitional phase. They have not yet developed the facial hair or the specific phenotypic traits of the historical Picts of our world; those characteristics would only emerge long after the Hyborian Age, through extensive interbreeding with Cimmerian and Vanir populations.

Aesthetic Synthesis

Authentic Pictish design requires a synthesis of three distinct cultural influences. Avoid favoring one to the exclusion of the others:

Influence Elements to Incorporate
Thurian Ancestry Ritualistic use of feathers, top-knots, shaved-side hairstyles, loincloths, and moccasins.
Neanderthal Heritage Hide-based clothing, bone-and-stone accessories, and primitive stone-age weaponry.
Early Historical Picts The nascent development of complex, clan-specific body and warpaint designs.

Lore Warning: Avoid "whitewashing." Depictions in various Conan media—such as the original film—frequently erroneously portray Picts as fair-skinned, bearded figures from our own history. This is inaccurate for the Hyborian Age. A lore-accurate Pict must maintain their dark, copper complexion and lack the dense facial hair of the later, historical era.

Racial Traits of the Picts

The physical profile of the Hyborian Pict is defined by geographical isolation, Neanderthal interbreeding, and a unique evolutionary path. These factors separate them from both their ancient ancestors and their future historical counterparts.

Physical Characteristics

  • Stature: The Picts are characterized by a short, stocky, and robust frame. This stout build is a defining trait derived from ancestral intermixing with Neanderthal populations during the late Thurian and early Hyborian Ages.
  • Complexion: They possess a deep, dark copper skin tone. While they are significantly darker than the fair-skinned Hyborians or Cimmerians, they do not possess the deep obsidian pigmentation found among the peoples of the Black Kingdoms.
  • Facial Features: They do not possess the epicanthic folds, or slanted eyes, common to later Native American populations. Those traits are exclusive to the Western Pict lineages that interbred with Lemurian refugees. The Hyborian Picts bypassed that specific evolutionary development.
  • Eyes: Their eyes are typically dark brown or black, well adapted to the dense, shaded forest environment.

Grooming and Hair

The Pictish approach to hair serves as both a tribal identifier and a functional necessity.

  • Standard Grooming: The most common style consists of a completely shaven head or shaven sides, with a long, braided ponytail or scalping tuft kept at the crown.
  • Exceptions: Chieftains, Shamans, and social outcasts, such as renegades, may occasionally allow their hair to grow out fully.
  • Women: Pictish women typically maintain long, natural hair.

Visual Reference: Facial Hair and Presentation

While the Picts are not a white race in the modern sense, and they certainly lack the heavy, full beards of Cimmerians or Vanir, their mixed heritage allows for the occasional, sparse development of facial hair.

Heavy beards are entirely anachronistic. If you choose to include facial hair for your character, it should be limited to slim goatees or sparse chinstraps.

Evolutionary Context

It is vital to understand that the Hyborian Pict is a transitional entity. They are not the whitewashed Picts of real world history, nor are they the Native American analogues of the Far West. They occupy a unique biological niche.

The Picts did not become the fair skinned people of our own history until long after the Hyborian Age, through extensive interbreeding with Cimmerian and Vanir populations. During the Hyborian Age, they remain a distinct, copper skinned, and Neanderthal influenced people.
